SAP Mobile Platform: Enter Agentry

Back in May, Brenton O'Callaghan created this great head line in his blog SAP Mobility Platform 2.3 - what is it all about?, and said that the SAP Mobile Platform (SMP):

"... is not just the former renamed - far from it. SAP are actively working to create a single mobile enabling platform that can fulfill all needs and the first step in this journey is to integrate the Agentry platform.

Back in April 2012 SAP acquired Syclo who specialized in mobile asset management and field service solutions through their Agentry platform and this is the component that has been built into the new “SAP Mobile Platform”. Now rather than having a separateSyco Agentry server we see a combined platform that brings the unique offering from Agentry together with the already powerful options we expect from the Sybase Unwired Platform."

Brenton's blog describes just one aspect that showcases the significance of the Agentry technology for SMP.

This strategy is further manifested with the the next version of the SAP Mobile Platform, SMP 3.0 - launched @ TechEd(blog by Jens Koerner).

Agentry- Landing Page for Techies

The increasing adoption of Agentry technology lead us to creating this page: A landing page for the technically oriented person, to collect and present the most relevant knowledge assets for Agentry mobile technology - be it as pure Agentry installations or part of SMP 2.3 projects.

Overview & Introduction

In October 2012, RIG team members BabuGanesh V and Dhimant Patel delivered a webinarOverview of Syclo and Agentry Architecture. The session covers an overview of Syclo, Agentry Apps and the Agentry Architecture (note: the replay is not working on Mac).

Don't know how to get started? Check this Implementation Methodology for Agentry Apps. It highlights some of implementation best practices for Agentry based Mobile app development, which have proven successful across industries. It's applicable for Agentry 5.x & 6.x.

Mobile Apps for Agentry - Building your own

Two excellent How-to Guides: Build an Agentry based mobile app from scratch, connecting to an SAP back-end.

Both Guides were developed along with the SMP 2.3 Developer Workshop Series that we ran last summer:

  • Part 1
This How-to guide will show you step by step how to create a very simple mobile app based on Agentry, which will retrieve flight information from an SAP ERP back-end and display it on the mobile device or Agentry test environment.
This guide walks you through the installation of the needed components, creation of the Agentry application and the necessary steps needed to perform in the SAP back-end system as well.
  • Part 2
The How-to guide is adding more complexity to the previously built Agentry based mobile app, walking you through transactions, data tables, complex table and how to deploy the mobile app on the SAP Mobile Platform 2.3.

And more great guides:

  • Configuration Practices for Agentry Based Mobile Apps
This document suggests naming conventions for objects created in the Agentry Editor. Application developers are strongly encouraged to follow these conventions to optimize program maintainability, design assistance and cross-app consistency. Agentry 5.x & 6.x
  • Design Approach for Agentry SAP Projects
This document provides an overview of the approach to design Agentry Objects, complex tables and cata tables while designing Mobile application. Agentry 6.x.
  • Setup Mobile Application Development Environment
